KurdiWelt ABC – what is this?
The Kurdish WeltABC is like its German sister (www.weltabc.at), an invitation to travel through language(s) and the pictures associated therewith. It is an apparently clear collection of terms, the starting point being the Kurdish language. These terms are associated through further terms and illustrated by photos.
The Kurdish WeltABC is not a lexicon striving to attempt a deeper explanation of the world.
On the contrary, it establishes a radical step:
it offers the possibility to observe the world through the eyes of the Kurdish language.
Languages don’t think in vocabulary, but in pictures and these are culture specific and very different.
The German and the Kurdish WeltABC are linked to each other through audios – if a term exists in both languages, the written form of the audio becomes the link: a dance between the languages and their differing pictures is possible. The audios of the Arabic, Farsi and French language also come into play.
Diversity comes to the fore and the haziness of language with its meaningful and believed terms becomes a bit clearer. In this haze, through the pictures, the common and meant term becomes apparent.
A special aspect of the Kurdish WeltABC is the fact that the language was banned for so long. Therefore there are regionally very different variations and ways of spelling – much appears similar rather than a definite stipulation.
Unfortunately a similar scenario is still apparent in many school classes: children, who don’t have a good command of the language of instruction, always learn that their mother tongue is useless. In doing this, resources that one can build on and that one could actually work with, are wasted.
Despite all contrasts, the possibility of meeting equally remains: not only the “dumb language” of the privately known finds an opposite that is not discriminating, but rather enriching; the already mastered language is seen as equal to other languages.
Exactly four words stood at the beginning of the German WeltABC: flower, cow, pot, knife. It is more than amazing what has become of these four words.
